Artist Bio
Vance Bollinger is a pianist based in Kansas City, MO, originating from Charleston, IL. Vance started piano at the age of six and began playing jazz in high school after he heard his first Miles Davis record, Relaxin’. Engrossed, he began pursuing excellence within the epic world of jazz. Vance’s performance credits include Notre Dame University Jazz Fest (2017), Taste of Champaign (2016, 2018), and C.I. Living (television, 2016). Some artists Vance played with include Reginald Chapman, Justin Copeland, Harold Agosto, and Trevor Dalton Moore. Since moving to KC in 2019, he frequently plays at many local venues such as The Phoenix, Café Trio, The Majestic, Corvino’s Supper Club & Tasting Room, and The New Theatre.
Enjoying KC life, Vance performs solo piano, collaborates with other local artists, such as vocalist Matthew McDowell, plays Gospel piano at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and accompanies for KC Ballet’s outreach program, Reach Out And Dance! (ROAD).
ROAD sends company ballet dancers and pianists to KC schools, introducing children to dance. In 2017, Vance had the privilege to co-lead the University of Illinois Juvenile Detention Center Arts Project. He and the UI students taught incarcerated youth music and visual art to foster creativity through restorative justice. Currently, Vance teaches piano students of all ages. He believes curiosity drives effective teaching. Vance seeks to uncover students’ innate abilities through a give and take in the learning process.
Vance graduated with highest honors from University of Illinois (Champaign), receiving degrees in Jazz Performance and Music Education. He studied with Larry Gray, Tito Carrillo, Paul Johnston, and Chip Stephens. Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and Red Garland influence Vance’s playing, along with Vulfpeck and John Mayer. Vance plays jazz, funk, blues, and more.
